Ewha Hosts Global Leader Lecture Series to Mark Its 140th Anniversary
Ewha Womans University hosted a special lecture by world-renowned sociologist Michèle Lamont, Robert I. Goldman Professor of European Studies at Harvard University, on June 8 at Lee Sam-bong Hall in the Ewha Campus Complex. The lecture was held as part of Ewha’s 140th Anniversary Commemorative Global Leader Lecture Series, co-organized by the Ewha Global Institute for Sustainable Partnership and Empowerment and the National Research Foundation of Korea’s SSK Research Group on Politics of Anti-Sentiment. Under the theme of “Global Dignity and ‘Seeing Others,’” Professor Lamont examined the issues of recognition, dignity, and inclusion from a sociological perspective. As a professor of sociology and African and African American studies at Harvard University, she drew upon her book Seeing Others to explain how an individual’s dignity and sense of belonging are formed through social relationships, emphasizing the importance of social inclusion. Professor Lamont also illustrated a range of conflicts and inequalities faced by society today in such areas as the climate crisis, the workplace, race relations, gender inequality, and the LGBTQ+ community, arguing that institutional and cultural changes are required to build a more inclusive society. Referring in particular to the experience of Gen-Z university students, she argued that the younger generation places greater importance on values such as mental health, authenticity, and inclusiveness than competition and success and noted that universities and society must transform existing structures to provide more people with practical opportunities. During a Q&A session after the lecture moderated by Professor Min Hee Go of the Department of Political Science & International Relations, students shared their opinions on inequality in global society and the role of the university while reflecting on their own roles and responsibilities as future leaders. Ewha is expanding its global collaborative network through various international academic and cultural events, such as the Global Leader Lecture Series, in celebration of its 140th anniversary.
Ewha Talks Collaboration with Leading Schools in Europe and the U.S.
Marking its 140th anniversary, Ewha Womans University hosted delegations from leading universities worldwide, including the University of Bologna in Italy, the German U15, and the George Washington University in the United States, to discuss ways to expand collaboration on research and education and foster exchange in strategic future fields. These visits represent a major step towards advancing the core objectives of the “New Era, New Ewha Development Plan,” which includes strengthening global research competitiveness and fostering an international educational environment. They also provide an opportunity to expand international collaborative research, establish global research networks, and promote exchange between students and researchers. On May 13, a delegation from the University of Bologna, led by Rector Giovanni Molari and Professor Raffaella Campaner, Vice Rector for International Relations, visited Ewha to discuss a wide range of collaborative initiatives, including joint research projects and academic conferences and exchange programs for students, PhD candidates, and academic staff. On May 20, a presidential delegation from the German U15, an association of fifteen major research-intensive universities in Germany, visited Ewha on its first official visit to Korea to discuss opportunities for collaboration in the fields of research and innovation, ranging from basic research to technology transfer, as well as ways to facilitate exchange between students and researchers. During its visit, the delegation toured the Center for Quantum Nanoscience, observing the cutting-edge research facilities and exploring opportunities for joint research. Then on June 2, a delegation led by Ellen M. Granberg, President of the George Washington University, visited Ewha to discuss the current status of cooperation between the two institutions and their shared vision for the future. The George Washington University expressed keen interest in Ewha’s College of Artificial Intelligence and its “AI 4 All Ewha” program and proposed potential collaboration linked to its own “Trustworthy AI Initiative.” In addition, the two universities discussed various kinds of potential collaboration in academia, research, and industry, including the operation of AI-related courses, research projects between their medical schools, an exchange program supporting student start-ups, and the Business School’s 4+1 MBA program. Moving forward, Ewha will continue to expand international collaborative research, academic cooperation, and faculty and student exchange programs with leading universities around the world, while strengthening its research networks in cutting-edge fields including AI, biotechnology, and quantum science with the aim of enhancing its standing as a global research-intensive university.
