37 Graduate Students Selected from the Humanities and Social Sciences and STEM Fields, Strengthening the Foundation for Fostering the Next Generation of Researchers
A total of 37 Ewha graduate students have been selected for academic research support programs funded by the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF). Graduate students from a wide range of fields, spanning the humanities and social sciences, natural sciences, engineering, and medicine and pharmacy, were selected, once again demonstrating their outstanding research capabilities and Ewha’s strength in fostering the next generation of scholars.
The Research Grants for Master’s and Doctoral Students is a major NRF program designed to support the next generation of scholars by enabling graduate students in Korea to conduct creative and challenging research. Master’s students in both the humanities and social sciences and STEM fields receive KRW 12 million in research funding for one year, while doctoral students receive KRW 40 million for two years in the humanities and social sciences and KRW 50 million for two years in STEM fields. With the support of the research funding, the selected students will deepen their respective research topics and conduct independent research.
In the humanities and social sciences, four master’s students and 14 doctoral students from a variety of fields, including Korean language and literature, psychology, social welfare, education, business administration, and physical education, were selected. In the STEM fields, 12 master’s students and six doctoral students from Chemistry and Nanoscience, Electronic & Electrical Engineering, Food Science & Biotechnology, Architectural & Urban Systems Engineering, and medical sciences were selected, demonstrating Ewha’s broad research capabilities.
Meanwhile, Kim Jeongeun, a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Psychology, was selected for the Global Research program, newly established this year. The program provides young postdoctoral researchers in the humanities and social sciences with opportunities for overseas research, supporting them in developing into researchers with global research capabilities. Kim Jeongeun will receive KRW 50 million in research funding for one year and conduct a study at the University of Denver in the United States titled “Can AI Help Humans Regulate Their Emotions? Exploring the Effects and Neurophysiological Mechanisms of Conversations with AI Using EMA and fNIRS.”
The selection demonstrates the research capabilities of Ewha’s graduate students across a wide range of academic fields. In particular, it is significant in that it provides students, from the master’s and doctoral stages that mark the first steps in their development as researchers, with a foundation for identifying their own research topics and conducting independent research. Ewha will continue to strengthen its research support system so that outstanding graduate students can devote themselves to creative and challenging research and grow into the next generation of researchers.
