A team of three students from Ewha Law School, consisting of Kim Gyuri, Lee Daeun, and Kwon Nahyun from the 18th cohort, received the Minister of Intellectual Property Award in the Trademark and Design Division at the 13th Intellectual Property Litigation Moot Court Competition, jointly organized by the Ministry of Intellectual Property (MOIP) and the Patent Court.
Now in its 13th year, the Intellectual Property Litigation Moot Court Competition was established to provide students at law schools across Korea with an opportunity to experience intellectual property litigation in an actual courtroom setting and to foster legal professionals specializing in intellectual property with both legal expertise and practical skills. This year, 53 teams comprising 159 students from 16 law schools nationwide participated, demonstrating strong interest in and enthusiasm for intellectual property litigation.
The competition was conducted based on case-based problems in patent and trademark litigation prepared by judges from the Patent Court and administrative patent judges from the Intellectual Property Trial and Appeal Board. Participants prepared and submitted written briefs and competed through preliminary, main, and final rounds to determine the final award recipients. Following a written evaluation, 24 teams advanced to the main round, where they presented oral arguments at the Patent Court in a courtroom setting. The judges evaluated the teams comprehensively based on their understanding of the issues and the appropriateness of their written and oral arguments, selecting the top six teams to advance to the final round.
After intense legal arguments in the final round, including oral arguments and responses to questions from the bench, the Ewha Law School team received the Minister of Intellectual Property Award in the Trademark and Design Division. Kim Gyuri said, “We were able to achieve such a good result because all of our team members supported and encouraged one another throughout the preliminary, main, and final rounds.” She added, “Based on the advice we received from the Patent Court judges during the arguments, I will continue to work hard to grow into a legal professional with expertise in intellectual property.”
In particular, this year’s award-winning teams will be given the opportunity to participate in an international moot court competition organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), allowing them to build on the experience they gained through the competition and continue their activities on the international stage.
