Yubin and Hong Chaewon Selected for OECD NEA Internship and Global Program N

Yubin (Division of International Studies, Class of 2024), a member of EM-POWER Her, a student network affiliated with Ewha’s New and Renewable Energy Research Center (Director: Jo William), has been selected for an internship at the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Hong Chaewon (Department of Climate and Energy Systems Engineering, Class of 2023) has been selected to participate in the NEA’s “Global Forum Rising Star Workshop 2026.”

EM-POWER Her is a student-led global network launched in April following the visit to Ewha by William D. Magwood IV, Director-General of the NEA. The network aims to support young women’s advancement into the nuclear and energy fields and strengthen their leadership capabilities. Its activities include developing policy proposals, conducting capstone design projects in the nuclear field, and carrying out social contribution activities to raise awareness of nuclear energy. During the last semester, the network also continued its international academic and exchange activities, including presenting a poster at “GLOW 2026,” a materials science conference for women leaders and emerging researchers held in Singapore.
Yubin, who has long been interested in international nuclear law, attended Director-General Magwood’s special lecture held at Ewha in April, where she expanded her understanding of nuclear diplomacy and women’s advancement in the nuclear field. She subsequently applied for the NEA internship and was selected in July as an intern in the Division of Radiological Protection and Human Aspects of Nuclear Safety (RP-HANS). As an intern, she will spend five months in Paris, France, through January next year, working on matters including safety culture, gender balance, and stakeholder engagement. Yubin said, “Building on the expertise I have developed as an International Studies major and my experience in activities related to international organizations, I look forward to gaining experience in international cooperation in the field of nuclear safety and contributing to diversity and inclusion policies.”
Hong Chaewon has also participated in various academic and exchange activities organized by EM-POWER Her since attending Director-General Magwood’s special lecture. She later learned about the NEA’s “Rising Star Workshop” through an EM-POWER Her seminar and applied for the program. The “Rising Star Workshop” is an NEA Global Forum program that identifies promising women working in science, technology, education, and policy in the nuclear and related fields and supports international exchange. Selected based on her research achievements in front-end nuclear fuel cycle economic assessments and enrichment, Hong Chaewon will present her research findings at the workshop to be held at Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) in Canada in late October. She will also share her research experiences with nuclear researchers and emerging talent from around the world and expand her global network.
The achievements of the two students are significant in that EM-POWER Her’s student-led activities are leading to substantive engagement with and opportunities at international organizations and global research networks. The New and Renewable Energy Research Center provides students with opportunities to expand their expertise on the international stage and grow into the next generation of women leaders through academic exploration and international cooperation.
