Ewha College of Engineering Students Receive Multiple Awards, Including Minister of Education Award, at 2026 ABEEK Capst N

Undergraduate students from the Department of Architectural and Urban Systems Engineering in the College of Engineering achieved outstanding results at the 2026 ABEEK Capstone Design and Student Portfolio Competition, hosted by the Accreditation Board for Engineering Education of Korea (ABEEK), receiving multiple awards including the Minister of Education Award, the President of ABEEK Award, and the Outstanding Portfolio Award. The awards ceremony will be held at the 2026 Industry-University Cooperation EXPO at Exhibition Hall 2 of KINTEX in Ilsan on Thursday, October 1.
The “An-neujeotjo” (We’re not late) team, consisting of Kim Tae Hee, Jeong Ha Rin, Jang Ju Won, and Jeong Jin A of the Department of Architectural and Urban Systems Engineering, received the Minister of Education Award in the Capstone Design Category. The “Da-aljo” (We know everything) team, consisting of Yoo Chae Yeon, Lee Ga Eun, and Jo Ha Yun, received the President of ABEEK Award.
The “An-neujeotjo” team, which received the Minister of Education Award, developed “MA-JUNG: A Smart Shelter Based on User Arrival Time.” Focusing on the public transportation environment in rural and fishing communities, including long intervals between buses and a high proportion of elderly passengers, the team proposed an automatic smart shelter control system that activates heating and cooling in advance based on when users are expected to arrive at the bus stop. The system was designed to calculate users’ estimated arrival times using GPS and bus operation information and to predict the amount of time needed to pre-activate heating and cooling based on indoor and outdoor temperatures and weather information. The system is expected to improve users’ comfort while waiting and potentially reduce heating and cooling energy consumption by approximately 67% compared to continuous operation.
The “An-neujeojo” team will participate in the Capstone Design Project Session at the COET International Conference 2026, to be held in Bangkok, Thailand, on Friday, September 18, where they will share the results of their project.
The “Da-aljo” team, which received the President of ABEEK Award, presented “A Situation-Adaptive Safety System for Pedestrians Using Smartphones Based on Integrated Digital Phenotyping, GIS, and Signal Information.” Focusing on the problem of pedestrians being unable to recognize surrounding hazards while using smartphones, the team developed a system that classifies pedestrian behavior using smartphone sensors, integrates GIS-based crosswalk information with V2X pedestrian signal information, and selectively provides safety alerts depending on the level of risk.
In the Student Portfolio Category, Kim Rae Hee, Kim Seo Ro, and Yoo Chae Yeon received the Outstanding Portfolio Award. The students were recognized for excellence in systematically documenting their learning outcomes and engineering competencies accumulated through their major curriculum and various extracurricular activities in their portfolios.
By producing award winners across both the Capstone Design and Student Portfolio categories, the competition once again demonstrated the strong academic and professional competencies and outstanding achievements of Ewha students cultivated through engineering education.
