International Collaboration Between Ewha Womans University and Université Paris-Saclay Continuing Since 2018

Ewha Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Master’s Graduate Lee SuBin Selected for Fully Funded International Doctoral Fellowship at One of Europe’s Leading Research Universities

Lee SuBin, a graduate of the Low-Dimensional Materials Laboratory in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, under the supervision of Professor Cho SuYeon, has been selected as a fellow of “LIGHTinPARIS,” an international doctoral fellowship program operated through the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) co-funding scheme under the European Union’s research and innovation program Horizon Europe. Lee, who completed her master’s degree in 2026, was selected as a final fellow. This achievement is particularly significant as it reflects not only Lee’s outstanding research capabilities, but also the international joint research and global research talent development system that Professor Cho has established with Université Paris-Saclay in France since 2018.

MSCA is a flagship researcher support program of the European Union named after Marie Skłodowska-Curie, the scientist who received the Nobel Prize twice. It is a world-class international researcher development program that comprehensively evaluates research excellence, international collaboration, interdisciplinary convergence, and researchers’ potential for growth.

Lee SuBin completed her master’s degree after conducting research in the field of low-dimensional materials at the laboratory of Professor Cho SuYeon in Ewha’s Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science. She will begin her doctoral studies at Université Paris-Saclay in France this October. Université Paris-Saclay is a world-renowned research-intensive university that ranked first in Europe and third in the world in physics in the 2023 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). Over the next three years, Lee will receive a fully funded fellowship and conduct international collaborative research under the joint supervision of Professor David Berardan and Professor Claudia Decorse of Université Paris-Saclay and Professor Cho SuYeon of Ewha.

Since 2018, Professor Cho SuYeon has continued academic exchanges and joint research with Université Paris-Saclay, establishing a foundation for international collaboration between the two institutions. In 2020, she conducted joint research with Professor Claudia Decorse as the principal investigator of the Korea Research Foundation’s STAR Program (Korea-France Cooperation Foundation Program). Currently, she is leading the “Korea–EU Global Hydrogen Research Exchange and Advanced Talent Development Project,” part of the 2025 BrainLink Program (Excellent Researcher Exchange Support Program), at Ewha, expanding international joint research and researcher exchanges with researchers at Université Paris-Saclay.

This year, to commemorate the 140th anniversaries of Ewha’s founding and the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and France, Ewha jointly hosted various academic and cultural events with the Embassy of France in Korea, further expanding the scope of cooperation. Ewha also discussed ways to strengthen collaboration with representatives from leading French universities and research institutions in areas including women’s education and research, future science and technology cooperation, international joint degree programs, and expanded exchanges among researchers, further solidifying cooperative ties between Ewha and French universities.

President Lee HyangSuk said, “Lee SuBin’s selection is a meaningful achievement made possible by both the student’s outstanding research capabilities and the international joint research network that Professor Cho SuYeon’s research team has steadily built. It is particularly significant because it demonstrates that our students are growing on the international stage through collaboration with world-class researchers.” She added, “Ewha Womans University will continue to strengthen its world-class research collaboration networks and fulfill its role as a research-focused university dedicated to nurturing global research talent.”

The Embassy of France in Korea stated, “The selection for the LIGHTinPARIS MSCA COFUND program is an example demonstrating the excellence of scientific and technological cooperation between Ewha Womans University and Université Paris-Saclay. It is also the result of the Embassy of France in Korea’s continued support, including through the Hubert Curien Partnership (PHC STAR), and the efforts of Professor Cho SuYeon’s research team to nurture the next generation of researchers.” The Embassy extended its congratulations, saying, “The Embassy of France in Korea sincerely congratulates Ewha Womans University and Professor Cho SuYeon and looks forward to the continued development of scientific and technological cooperation between Korea and France.”

Professor Cho SuYeon said, “This selection is a very meaningful achievement, as Lee SuBin’s outstanding research capabilities and diligent approach to research have received international recognition.” She added, “I am very pleased that the international collaboration with Université Paris-Saclay, which has continued since 2018, has led to the meaningful outcome of nurturing outstanding research talent. We will continue to expand global joint research and joint degree programs and support our students so that they can grow in world-class research environments.”

The selection of Lee SuBin for LIGHTinPARIS is particularly significant as it demonstrates that the long-standing international joint research between Ewha Womans University and Université Paris-Saclay has led to a tangible outcome in the development of global research talent. The selection is expected to serve as an opportunity to further expand international joint degree programs, researcher exchanges, and joint research between the two institutions.
