Won Bok Lee Professor

Professor Won Bok Lee has built a sustained research focus in digital health and health data governance, the regulation of artificial intelligence in medicine, pharmaceutical and medical device law, and intellectual property. Running through these fields is a single concern: the legal infrastructure that technology-driven industries depend on, and that in Korea is still taking shape even as those industries move toward the center of the national economy.

He has served as principal investigator on several research grants from the National Research Foundation of Korea, on topics including genomic privacy and university entrepreneurialism. He has also advised the Korean government in several capacities, serving on the Korea Copyright Commission and on the Expert Committee for Human Research Subject Protection under the National Bioethics Committee of Korea.

His current work centers on artificial intelligence, and above all on algorithmic fairness. He asks what legal standards can do about models that reproduce the health inequities buried in the data they learn from.

Professor Lee also works on high-technology disputes, sitting as an arbitrator in both international and domestic proceedings.

Professor Lee studied medicine at Seoul National University and law at Harvard Law School, and practiced in both fields before entering academia. He is a member of the Korean Bar Association and the Korean Medical Association.
