Ewha Researchers Find a Way to Reduce Vibration Without Sacrificing Stiffness

Professor Sangryun Lee

Department of Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering

Conventional resonant lattice metamaterials often experience a reduction in structural stiffness when additional masses or slender connectors are introduced to widen vibration attenuation bands. To address this issue, the research team designed lattice members with smoothly varying thicknesses using Bézier curves and applied machine learning–based Bayesian optimization to identify geometries that provide broadband vibration attenuation.

The optimized lattice achieved a relative bandgap width of 126%, exceeding that of a conventional cylindrical lattice by 123 percentage points. Vibration transmission and compression tests on 3D-printed specimens confirmed broadband vibration attenuation, while the measured elastic modulus was approximately 3.3 to 18.9 times higher than those of representative resonant lattice designs.

The study shows that tailoring the geometry of lattice members can improve the balance between vibration attenuation and structural stiffness. The proposed design approach could be applied to lightweight structures requiring vibration control, including aerospace components and precision machinery.
