Ewha Womans University Museum (Director: Jang Nam-won), which held the 2021 special exhibition In Praise of Plants, won the Exhibition Excellence Award in the University Museum Promotion Project. The museum was also selected as an “Excellent Exhibition Hall” in 2020 for holding a special exhibition Scenes From 19th Century Joseon, which means that the museum has been recognized for its excellence of exhibition for two years in a row.

The University Museum Promotion Project, hosted by Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and The Korean Association of University Museums, has been conducted since 2018 to revitalize cultural and artistic functions of University museums and expand the benefits of cultural welfare and education service to local residents and teenagers based on University museums. The special exhibition In Praise of Plants was held as a part of “Ewha Womans University Museum’s Cultural Connecter Project III” of the University Museum Promotion Project, and the museum has been carrying out this project for four years now.

The special exhibition In Praise of Plants was an opportunity to appreciate various aspects of plants and beautiful artworks that comfort exhausted minds and bodies of people and be friends with them at this time of the long pandemic, and well regarded to be a refreshing combination of traditional and contemporary art. The special exhibition ended on the 30th of November, but is still available online through the VR exhibition hall.

In this exhibition, five participatory AR artworks of Ewha museum were displayed, including Haehak Peninsula (Seoul Tangible Cultural Property No. 420), which enables visitors to experience the dynamic and realistic scene of waterfall pouring and cranes flying through peach trees in a beautiful Yoji pond, and Hwagak Ham, where all kinds of animals come to life on the surface made up of flaked and finely ground cow horns.

The five participatory AR artworks newly created by Ewha museum by combining Ewha’s collection and digital technology provide Cheonju citizens with an opportunity to enjoyably experience the new aspects of our cultural heritage through the exhibition. In particular, thanks to the geographical characteristic of Ochang Exhibition Hall, the Annex building of Cheongju Museum of Art, located in Ochang Lake Library, is receiving a lot of attention by children and parents who visited the library during the vacation.

In 2022, in spite of the tough situation at home and abroad, Ewha Womans University Museum will continue its activities as a “cultural connector” for Ewha and local residents and create various opportunities of enjoyment and education using Ewha’s cultural resources.
