The Department of Science Education at the College of Education held the 2026 Ewha Science Education Academic Festival on September 14 (Monday) at Kim Ae-ma Hall. Co-hosted by the Department of Science Education and the Hazard Literacy Convergence Education Research Institute, the festival brought together approximately 50 attendees, including 32 presenters and undergraduate and graduate students from the department, to share research findings and diverse academic experiences.

Held under the theme “Share your research, Inspire together!”, the festival was organized to provide undergraduate and graduate students with an opportunity to share the achievements and experiences they had gained through internships, exchange programs, the TELOS Track, undergraduate research, and individual research projects, while promoting academic exchange among members of the department. Presentations were divided into three areas: science education; general foundational and interdisciplinary sciences; and school activities and academic experiences. The program featured both oral presentations and poster presentations.

The event opened with remarks by Park EunHye, Dean of the College of Education, followed by Oral Presentation Session 1, the poster session, and Oral Presentation Session 2. The first oral presentation session featured nine presentations focusing on Earth science, science education, and school activities. A wide range of research was introduced, including a study quantifying water masses surrounding West Antarctic ice shelves and the contribution of meltwater using oxygen isotopes; research on galaxy formation; stratospheric aerosol injection and climate change; and a climate change modeling lesson using generative AI-based vibe coding. Students also shared their academic experiences, including those gained through exchange programs and the Challenge Semester program.

The subsequent poster session featured 10 studies in science education and foundational and interdisciplinary sciences. Topics included science teachers’ modeling of socio-scientific issues (SSI), changes in extreme cold spells in the midlatitudes resulting from climate engineering, hydrocarbon separation and cryogenic hydrogen storage using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), the development of participatory and action-oriented science lessons addressing torrential rain and heat waves, and the assessment of evapotranspiration using stable water isotopes. Presenters and attendees engaged in open question-and-answer sessions on these diverse research topics.

The second oral presentation session featured 10 studies, primarily in physics, chemistry, and biology. The presentations covered a broad range of research, including elastic scattering experiments using a heavy-ion accelerator; the stability of cellulose nanofiber (CNF)-based Pickering emulsions; hydrophobic MOFs for surface modification of lithium-ion battery electrodes; and cellular stress responses in human endometrial cells. The session also featured science education research, including a study of how teachers develop their identities through participation in environmental education centered on ecological experiences.

The festival also recognized outstanding presenters, with separate awards for undergraduate and graduate students. The Grand Prize and Excellence Award were presented in the name of the Dean of the College of Education, while the Encouragement Award was presented in the name of the Head of the Department of Science Education, recognizing students’ research activities and academic achievements.

The festival was particularly meaningful in bringing undergraduate and graduate students together to explore one another’s research and exchange ideas, regardless of their specific fields of study or stages of academic development. The Department of Science Education plans to continue expanding its academic activities, enabling students to actively present and exchange their research findings and diverse academic experiences while developing their capabilities as future science teachers and researchers.
