Ewha Womans University’s 2024 New Year’s Concert Celebrates the New Year with the Community

Ewha Womans University successfully held its 2024 New Year’s Concert at Welch-Ryang Auditorium at 2 p.m. on January 2, 2024 (Tue.). To celebrate the Year of the Blue Dragon, known as the “gapjin” year in the traditional 60-year sexagenary cycle, the university invited members of the local community in Seodaemun District to this event for the first time. Professors, students, and alumnae from the university’s College of Music, Korea’s first music department established in 1925, participated and delivered high-caliber performances. The event was well-attended, with approximately 2,800 university staff, students, and local residents filling every available seat.

Before the concert, President Eun Mee Kim delivered her New Year’s greeting with the following remarks: “We are delighted to present this New Year’s concert as a token of our appreciation to residents of Seodaemun District at Ewha Womans University Welch-Ryang Auditorium. Built in 1956, this deeply meaningful venue was the largest of its kind in Asia at the time of its construction, and has since hosted major events including chapels, entrance ceremonies, and graduation ceremonies.” She added, “I hope that 2024, the Year of the Blue Dragon, will be a wonderful new year filled with hopes and dreams that soar as proudly as its namesake.”

The concert began with a piano piece by Franz Schubert, followed by performances from the Seodaemun District Boys and Girls Choir, the Ewha Gayageum Ensemble WITH, and Ewha SORI—the latter two groups composed of current Ewha students. All performances received enthusiastic responses from the audience. The event continued with the Ewha Philharmonic Orchestra, including professors, alumnae, and students from the College of Music, under the baton of Professor Ki-sun Sung from the Department of Orchestral Instruments. The finale was a spectacular collaborative performance featuring Professor Ji Hwa Shin of the Department of Voice and the Ewha Music College Choir, accompanied by the Ewha Philharmonic Orchestra.

Since relocating from the old school building in Jeong-dong to the current Sinchon campus in 1935, Ewha Womans University has been a part of the Seodaemun District for 88 years. The university has consistently strived to contribute to the community and neighborhood with a spirit of service and sharing. Moving forward, Ewha aims to continue promoting the values it upholds by engaging with the local community and taking the initiative in social contributions. The university seeks to expand Ewha’s culture of mutual respect and care (“E-Culture”), to grow alongside the community as a university that stands proudly by its neighbors.
