Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha Delivered a Special Lecture at Ewha Womans University

Ewha Womans University invited Kang Kyung-wha, Minister of Foreign Affairs, on April 9th (Mon), and held a special lecture on ‘political issues on the Korean Peninsula and the global diplomacy’ at the Lee San-bong Hall of the ECC building. This was her first time to visit a university and deliver a lecture after her inauguration, and that was live on Facebook of Minister of Foreign Affairs.


On this day, over 600 Ewha students filled at the Lee San-bong Hall and Multipurpose Hall of the ECC building to participate in the event hosted by Ewha Institute for Social Sciences and Career Development Center. Presided over by Professor Sohn Ji-ae (Department of International Studies), a former CNN Seoul bureau chief, the event provided the greeting of Kim Hei-sook, the president, the special lecture by Minister Kang Kyung-wha, and a questions and answers session for one and a half hours.

Minister Kang Kyung-wha said in the lecture that Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been making efforts to address nuclear issues of North Korea and set a peace on the Korean Peninsula, referring recent diplomatic successes, including a successful hosting of Pyeong Chang Winter Olympics and Paralympics and agreement to hold the South-North and US-North summits. In addition, she stressed that Korea needs to diversify diplomacy in accordance with a higher status of Korea in the international community, and put emphasis on the importance of young women’s role in the global stage which becomes wider through the diplomatic diversification. The minister urged the students to widen their perspective to the world and to foster their own competitiveness, saying that the building of gender equality society and women’s active participation in all sectors of society are the premise of national development. In the Q&A session with students, there were talks about △Korea’s diplomatic policies beyond four powers of the United States, China, Russia and Japan △following measures on a deal on “comfort women” between South Korea and Japan △Korea’s participation in the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).
