The ODA (Official Development Assistance) project on education has been successfully completed since the start of the joint efforts in Cambodia in 2012 by the Departments of International Studies, Social Welfares, Korean Studies, and Environmental Science and Engineering at Ewha and the Royal University of Phnom Penh. Beyond simply spreading Hallyu, Ewha has significantly contributed to Cambodia’s firm foundation for fostering professional manpower to help the country achieve sustainable development by its own, carrying out the ODA project as part of the Fostering and Supporting Leading Universities in International Cooperation over the past 6 years.

During a workshop held at the Royal University of Phnom Penh from March 22 (Thu) to March 23 (Fri) to celebrate the achievement of the project, the Departments of International Studies, Social Welfares, and Environmental Science and Engineering hosted an expert forum and a research competition for sustainable development and the Department of Korean Studies held a Korean language education session. In particular, about 150 students majoring in Korean at the Royal University of Phnom Penh and about 60 Cambodian Korean teachers participated in the language education session that consisted of a Korean speech contest, training for Korean language teachers, and a special lecture on Korean language, which showed their passion for learning Korean studies.

The Department of Korean Studies led the project and contributed to nurturing people of talent for Korean language and studies through a tailored education model that reflected the characteristics and needs of Cambodia. As a result, the number of newly enrolled Korean majors at the Royal University of Phnom Penh jumped by more than 400% and the number of applicants who passed the Korean language proficiency test increased dramatically by 370%. Above all, this year’s Korean language education session has great significance in that the Royal University of Phnom Penh played a leading role in planning and conducting it, showing that the experiment on the sustainability of Ewha’s ODA project on education has succeeded.
