Ewha Confers an Honorary Doctoral Degree to Ki-Moon Ban, Secretary-General of the United Nations

Ewha Womans University awarded a honorary degree of doctor of Philosopy in Women’s Studies to Ki-Moon Ban, Secretary-General of the United Nations. President Kyunghee Choi stated, “Ewha has decided to award a honorary doctoral degree to Secretary-General Ki-Moon Ban, who has committed himself to women’s empowerment and social justice.”

In his acceptance speech, Secretary-General Ban said, “I commend President Kyunghee Choi for her visionary leadership in Ewha Womans University and I humbly accept on behalf of the billions of women in the world who deserve greater empowerment, dignity, and rights.”

Ewah has conferred 107 honorary doctoral degrees to prominent individuals who obtained outstanding achievements in world peace. The primary recipients include but are not limited to Tarja Kaarina Halonen, 11th President of Finland (2002), Mary Patricia McAleese, 8th President of Ireland (2005), Michelle Bachelet, 34th & 36th President of Chile (2009), and Angela Dorothea Merkel, 21th-23th Chancellor of Germany (2010).

Ewha Womans University is widely known as a trail-blazing pioneer in the field of Women's Studies in Korea. In 1975, Ewha Womans University launched the first Women's Studies Research Project. After two years of research and preparation, the first course was officially offered in 1977. Several years later in 1982, the Department of Women's Studies was established in the Graduate School of Ewha Womans University and thus began to award master degrees. Furthermore, the department started offering Ph.D. degree courses in 1991, continuing their progression towards prestige.
