Established on the Ewha Campus, the Western Seoul Center for Korea Basic Science Institute (KBSI) held an opening ceremony to officially commence its activities on July 1 in the second-floor auditorium of the University-Industry Cooperation Center.

The Western Seoul Center is the tenth KBSI office, occupying the greatest area of space and equipped with basic research infrastructure to the approximate value of 30 billion won. Prof. Lee Sang-gi (Div. of Chemistry & Nano Science) was appointed as the first director of the KBSI Western Seoul Center. This space is reserved exclusively for research specialized on the convergence and integration of nano, bio, and pharmaceutical technology and is expected to provide research assistance, joint research, and development of research equipment through its high-tech and large-scale research facilities and equipment.

The Western Seoul Center is housed in Ewha’s University-Industry Cooperation Building, which was completed in April 2014 and comprises five stories and one underground level on a site covering 25,785 square meters (7,800 pyeong). This building also accommodates the Ewha-Solvay Research & Innovation Center, established through Ewha’s collaboration with Solvay, the foreign multinational corporation boasting 150 years of history, as well as the Brain-inspired Science Research Institute, the Business Incubator, the Office of Research, and the University-Industry Collaboration Foundation. The addition of the Western Seoul Center to the University-Industry Cooperation Building will provide a further venue for academic-industrial collaboration and play a pivotal role for research among universities and corporations in and around Seoul.
