[Ewha Voice] Memorable moments of 2013

1From the 1.5 percent tuition cut to the new Student Government Association presidential election, Ewha has undergone countless events, accomplishments and changes in the year of 2013. With the year closely ending its chapter, the Ewha Voice has looked back at significant news of the year through numbers.

The College of Music established the first university philharmonic orchestra in Korea. The Ewha Philharmonic Orchestra is composed of 80 members of currently enrolled Ewha students and alumnae with professor Sung Ki-sun (Orchestral Instruments) as the conductor. The orchestra’s main goal is to spread high quality music culture to those in local and marginalized areas and ultimately become a leading music college in the nation.

Ewha ranked 11th in JoongAng Ilbo’s 2013 College Evaluation, scoring 188 out of 300. The evaluation was conducted on 100 four-year universities in Korea. The criteria for this year’s evaluation were professor research, globalization, condition of education, social reputation and entry into society. Ewha ranked 10th in globalization, 12th in professor research, 13th in condition of education and 20th in both social reputation and entry into society.

2Remodeling and replacements of old and inconvenient facilities within campus took place over the spring semester and summer vacation in 5 buildings. Tables, chairs and boards in the Ewha-POSCO buidling, female bathrooms on the first floor of the Student Union Building, and sofas and sleeping beds in the Ewha Campus Complex have been replaced and remodeled. In the Hanwoori Hall, facilities including door locks, televisions, walls and office areas were repaired and relocated. The Ewha Womans University Library had changes made in both their floor structures and facilities.

An opening ceremony for the Ewha Donor’s Wall was held at the Ewha Campus Complex on May 9. The wall was constructed as one of the events for Ewha’s 127th anniversary in order to pay a greater tribute as well as gratitude toward the donors. Ewha Donor’s Wall consists of two walls: the Digital Wall and the Analogue Wall. On the Digital Wall, all 18,733donors’ names and Ewha’s vision to become a hub for women leaders are included. On the Analogue Wall, 221 large sum donors’ names were inscribed on wooden blocks, each name glowing with light.

Ewha further reduced tuition by 1.5% for 2013. The decision was reached as a means to relieve students’ and their partents’ financial burden in today’s economically pressing time. It has been two consecutive years in which a reduction in tuition has been implemented at Ewha.

3Ewha celebrated its 127 ceremony at the Welch-Ryang Auditorium on May 31. The Ewha Womans University Alumni Association’s Homecoming Day was held after the awards ceremonies and special guests of honor who graduated Ewha 30 or 50 years ago were invited.

Students’ payment rate concerning the student union fee decreased substantially this year. Compared to 77.91 million won for last year’s spring semester, the student union fee for this year’s first semester amounted to only 582,000,000won, showing a decrease of approximately 25 percent. The student union fee is paid selectively by Ewha students during the tuition payment period. Usually about 70 to 80 percent of the registered students pay the student union fee. However this year, only 8,314 out of 16,083 Ewha students made the payment, resulting in a low payment rate of about 50 percent. The Office of Student Affairs (OSA) thinks this phenomenon may be a result of recent negative publicity. Following the substantial decline rate of the fee, the SGA is suffering from financial difficulties.

According to the results in the analysis of accumulated money and educational expenditures for schools presented by a member of the National Assembly under the Education, Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee on Aug. 29, Ewha has the highest amount of accumulated money, recording over 758,700,000,000. The Office of Financial Affairs states that the accumulated money has its own use for distinct categories. The accumulated money will be used for building and reconstructing architectures on campus, student scholarships, research, university employees’ retirement fund and other school management purposes. The greatest amount is placed under scholarship funds with 212.8 billion won; approximately 200 billion won is placed under building funds, which will most likely be used to build the new Ewha Residential College dormitory; 61 billion won is placed under research funds, followed by 6.3 billion won for university employees’ retirement funds. The remaining 200 billion won is categorized as other funds.

66 public figures visited Ewha. These include Quentin Bryce, the first female Governor-General of Austrailia, Drew Giplin Faust, the first woman president of Harvard University, and Tarha Halonen, former first woman president of Finland.

Hanwoori Hall has abolished its roll call system on Feb. 26 due to the continuous complaints from the students. The roll call system, in which Hanwoori Hall residence tutors supervise residents by visiting each student’s room every day at 11 p.m., received 47 percent of replies from residents agreeing on abolishing the roll call system and 46 percent replying that the system was in need of improvement in a survey conducted in April 2012. Accordingly, Hanwoori Hall lessened the number of roll calls from seven times to five times a week in May 2012 as a trial operation. Instead, Hanwoori Hall implemented a new system, the Weekly Check-up. As the roll call system is lifted, the curfew is now 12.
