The first in the nation to establish Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) equipment for use in research

On Monday, April 1st, Ewha held the opening ceremony for the Ewha Brain Institute (tentatively named) and the Ewha Brain Imaging Center in the Pharmaceutical Science Building A (room 404).

Ewha Brain Institute (tentatively named), led by chair professor Mr. Ryu In-Kyun, was established for the purpose of research on the promising future of brain science. The center will not only cover the areas of medicine and pharmacy, but also liberal arts, social studies, and the arts. By covering a variety of fields of study, the center will explore new interdisciplinary lines of integrated and creative brain studies.

The Ewha Brain Imaging Center is the first in the nation to institute Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) as a method of research rather than an actual treatment. The brain is an organ with such huge energy consumption that it even consumes energy during sleep. Using MRI technology, scientists can gather information not only on the brain’s energy metabolism, but also on activity of minute structures of the brain. MRI is capable of measuring the brain area’s biochemical substance concentration. Through this method, groundbreaking research on the brain’s biochemical changes at the molecular level is possible.

Professor Ryu In-Kyun, the director of Ewha Brain Institute (tentatively named) said, “While studies aimed at an integrated understanding of the human brain are spreading, Ewha’s concentrated investment and enthusiastic support have made it possible to open the world’s best brain research platform”, adding that he would like to “Create positive outcomes by researching more on ‘women’s brains’ which has not been the subject of thorough research”.

Ewha recognizes the importance of brain studies as a promising area of scientific research. With Professor Ryu In-Kyun as chair professor since accepting the university’s invitation last fall, Ewha intends to play a leading role in the area of brain science by creating optimal research conditions for mental, behavioral, and brain imaging studies through the new Ewha Brain Imaging Center.
