Global leaders from diverse backgrounds are continuously visiting Ewha. During the week of March 25th, Tarja Kaarina Halonen, the former president of Finland, and Kamal Ahmad, the president of AUW, each delivered a chapel lecture at the Ewha auditorium.

On March 25th, Halonen shared her experiences as ‘woman’ and ‘leader’ with Ewha students, expressing her wish to see Ewha students transform into women leaders.

The first female president of Finland, Halonen led the country for 12 years, from 2000 until 2012. Ewha granted Halonen a degree of ‘doctor of political science’ in April 2000.

Before the lecture, Ewha’s President, Dr.jur. Sun-uk Kim welcomed Halonen’s visit, saying “For global women leaders, Ewha has become one of the most important places to visit in Korea.”

During the lecture, Halonen received applause from about 2000 Ewha students upon declaring “the opportunity to become a future leader of Korea is already open to those of you who are receiving a great education at Ewha.”

On March 28th, Ewha students had a chance to meet Mr. Kamal Ahmad, founder of the Asian International University for Women (AUW). The university is currently educating female students of 12 Asian countries, including Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan.

During his lecture, Mr. Ahmad said, “Ewha was an inspiration when I was planning the establishment of AUW in the year 2000.” He added, “Ewha signals what we have to go after and it is a driving force of confidence.”

Ewha agrees with the purpose and vision of AUW, and the two institutions signed an MOU in February 2013. The agreement created a scholarship for students, established a student and faculty exchange relationship, and created a pathway to send one or more AUW graduates to the Ewha Global Empowerment Program (EGPP) each year for the next three years.
