The special lecture, titled “Reason of Hope,” by Jane Goodall, an internationally renowned ape scholar, environmentalist, and a distinguished professor of the Ewha Academy for Advanced Studies (EAAS), was held in the auditorium on November 16 (Friday).

The lecture delivered a message on the importance of life and the role of hope in surmounting environmental crises. The lecture has previously been offered to Ewha undergraduate students in 2004 and 2007; however, this was the first time that Ewha has offered a public lecture of this kind. More than 2,800 people fully filled the auditorium to listen to Prof. Goodall speak.

The public lecture was offered as part of the Ewha Academy for Advanced Studies (EAAS), Biodiversity Foundation, and JGI Korea. The lecture was also the occasion for the declaration of the establishment of a “Biodiversity Foundation”. “I hope that this lecture will provide motivation to spread the values of the importance of life and preservation of diversity—which professor Goodall and Ewha share—with the audience, so that we can strengthen our understanding of life,” said Jae-Chun Choe, distinguished professor of Ecoscience, who oversaw interpretation during the event.

Prof. Goodall said that despite vast ecological destruction there are reasons to hope due to “nature’s recuperative power, international youngsters’ energy and enthusiasm, and the indomitable human spirit.”  In addition, Goodall emphasized that “the destructive nature of human beings may seem incorrigible, but we should not give up, as nature has enormous power to recover if we wait.”

Jane Goodall, a distinguished professor of the Ewha Academy for Advanced Studies, has been studying the behaviors and lifestyles of wild chimpanzees in Gombe, a national park in Tanzania, Africa.
