On Thursday, November 8, Jean-Pierre Clamadieu, CEO of Solvay, delivered a special lecture in the Science Building B101 at Ewha.

Solvay is an international chemical company headquartered in Belgium and established by Belgian Chemist Ernest Solvay in 1863. The company is active in research in fields such as fuel cells, secondary cells, new renewable energies, water treatments, organic electronics, and LED.

In May 2011, Ewha entered an agreement with Solvay to base the company’s Korean RDT Center and Global Business Unit on the Ewha campus. Solvay will invest $21,500,000 in the venture. This is the first instance of a multinational corporation establishing its global R&D headquarters in a Korean university, and the agreement is regarded as an example of the positive results brought by industry-university cooperation.

In addition, Ewha and Solvay plan to develop joint research infrastructure together and to train talented women in various fields of science. The special lecture by Mr. Clamadieu was designed as part of the company’s goal to enhance its competitiveness through education, including supporting the talent of Ewha’s women scientists.

The theme of the lecture was “Today’s Mega Trends and Global Problems: How Chemists Can Contribute to a Better World of Tomorrow?” brought together a total of 120 attendees including Prof. Jin-Ho Choy, Executive Vice President for External Affairs, Prof. Sung-Jin Kim, Dean of the College of Natural Sciences, professors from the College of Natural Sciences and College of Engineering, and undergraduates and graduates from the College of Natural Sciences.

In his lecture, Mr. Clamadieu provided an overview of some contemporary mega trends and shared opinions on how Ewha’s faculty and researchers, including students and chemists, can utilize these trends. The concept of “mega trends”, he said, is a powerful presence in today’s globalized society.

“Solvay is focusing on high growth markets such as electronic materials, lithium-ion batteries, and solar batteries, and is also building the Ewha-Solvay R&D center for intelligent nano-bio materials and renewable energy related joint research,” Mr. Clamadieu revealed. “Through this cooperation, we anticipate that we can develop technology suited to current megatrends.”
