The Ewha Language Center (ECC) held a book launching in ECC’s Lee San-Bong Hall on October 18th (Thursday) to commemorate the completion of the ECC’s textbook, “Ewha Korean.”

“Ewha Korean,” composed of 26 textbooks and workbooks, is a series of Korean language learning textbooks for foreigners. It was created by the Ewha Language Center and published by Ewha Press. The textbooks are widely used both domestically and abroad. Foreign universities using the textbook include Chinese Culture University, Japan’s Rikkyo University, and UAE University, and affiliated language education centers using the textbook include National Taiwan University, UK’s University of Manchester, and two others. Five domestic universities, including Anyang University, Inha University and Chosun University, also use the “Ewha Korean” textbook.

The history of Ewha’s Korean textbooks goes back to ‘‘Pathfinder in Korean,’’ which was well-received as the first national communication textbook published in 1998. The ‘‘Ewha Korean” series was developed as a Korean textbook which incorporated the strengths of “Pathfinder in Korean” with a more systematic structure and colorful content more relevant to contemporary life in Korea. The textbooks were completed after approximately four years of trial use and revision since 2008 when the project was undertaken.

“Ewha Korean” is designed to develop four key areas of language: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Specially designed to train speaking abilities intensively, “Ewha Korean” was selected as a Korean education textbook in Southeast Asia and Europe after its first publication. “Ewha Korean” has been leading Korean textbooks’ Korean Wave, and has sold more than 30,000 copies since 2010.
