The ADeKo(Alumninetzwerk Deutschland-Korea) and Ewha has held the 'AdeKo-Ewha Special Forum, the Science and Society' on December 4th at the Science Building in Ewha Campus. The forum roused the awareness of the society on the social roles and responsibilities of science and contributed to enhance the understanding between Korea and Germany in the natural science field. Many special lectures and in-depth discussion was held during the forum.

Michael Paulus, the head of the German Academic Exchange Service, introduced the research environment of Germany on the subject of ‘Germany, the country of ideas’.

"I found out that many scientists devoted in making Germany give up nuclear energy and shut down all the nuclear plants by 2022. I was very impressed at the fact that scientists influence making decisions with actual persuasive evidence to make our life better,” said Kim Sun-Uk, the president of Ewha Womans University and also the President of ADeKo. "There will be a time when moral philosophy will play a very important role when you become the professionals in the future. I hope you dream to devote to the world in right ways and do not forget that you all are expected to make the right decision," she added in the celebrating speech to the Ewha students who attended the forum.

Some participants and experts lectured a wide range of topics: “the Social Role of Scientists and the Future of Korea's Science” by the chair-professor Choi Jae-Chun, “the Role of Science in the Political Decision Making: Why Did Germany Give up the Nuclear Energy?” by Matthias Kleiner the president of Forchungsgemeinschaft. A discussion on “the Interaction of the Science and the Society” was carried following the lectures.

ADeKo, which was established in 2008, has approximately 6,000 members in Korea and more than 20,000 Koreans are estimated to have studied in the country. Lee Ki-Su, president of Korea University, served as the first chairman of the board and Kim Sun-Uk, president of Ewha Womans University, succeeded him.
