Ewha Marks 20th Anniversary of Exclusive Harvard Summer School Partnership
Ewha Womans University held a commemorative event on July 22 at the LG Convention Hall in the International Education Building to mark the 20th anniversary of its summer school partnership with Harvard University, the only such partnership in Korea. Launched in 2006, the Ewha–Harvard Summer School Program is jointly administered by Ewha’s Graduate School of International Studies, Harvard Summer School, and the Korea Institute at Harvard University. Over the past two decades, the program has fostered academic and cultural exchange between students from the two universities, establishing itself as a leading model of global educational collaboration.
The program brings Ewha and Harvard students together to attend lectures on Korean history, culture, and society and participate in debates, Korean language classes, and field trips, broadening their understanding of Korea while fostering a global perspective.
The commemorative event was attended by Eun Mee Kim, Chairperson of Ewha Womans University’s Board of Trustees; Ewha President Hyang-Sook Lee; and Ihn-Hwi Park, Dean of the Graduate School of International Studies, along with representatives from Harvard University and faculty members and students from both universities, to reflect on two decades of collaboration and share their vision for the future. In her congratulatory remarks, President Lee described the Ewha–Harvard Summer School Program as a leading example of international education that embodies the two universities’ shared values and vision, emphasizing the importance of global collaboration for future generations. Chairperson Kim introduced the program’s educational philosophy of immersive learning through firsthand experiences in Korea and described it as a sustainable model of collaboration that has broadened students’ global perspectives over the past 20 years.
The event also included an exchange of commemorative gifts between the two universities, the presentation of a plaque of appreciation, a tribute to the late Professor Carter J. Eckert and other individuals who contributed to the program’s development, a celebratory performance by Ewha’s Department of Korean Music, and a screening of a video commemorating the program’s 20th anniversary.
The 2026 Ewha–Harvard Summer School Program runs from July 22 to August 19, with students from both institutions attending lectures on Korean culture and special lectures by experts, visiting historical sites, and engaging in field-based learning. The commemorative event provided an opportunity to reflect on Ewha’s two decades of international educational collaboration and to further promote global talent development and international academic exchange.
