Ewha Researchers Selected for National R&D Projects
Researchers at Ewha Womans University have been selected for national research and development projects in the fields of basic science, environmental technology, and new medicine development, demonstrating the university’s research capabilities.
Research teams from the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering have been selected for the 2026 Basic Research Laboratory Program funded by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Research Foundation of Korea, each receiving KRW 1.5 billion in funding over three years. A research team led by Professor Won Joonyeong of the Department of Mathematics will conduct a research project integrating algebraic geometry and topology to explore the relationships between the longstanding open problem known as Durfee’s conjecture, complex singularities, and exotic spheres. Through international collaborative research with KAIST, the team aims to advance world-class research in fundamental mathematics.
A research team led by Distinguished Professor Yoon Yeomin of the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering will develop next-generation water treatment technologies for the energy-efficient removal of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) generated by the semiconductor and battery industries. By establishing a new separation membrane platform that combines nanomaterial-based adsorbents, nanobubble regeneration technology, and AI-based membrane design and automated operation, the team is expected to help industries comply with environmental regulations and secure sustainable water treatment technologies.
In addition, a research team led by Professor Sun-Shin Cha of the Department of Chemistry and Nanoscience, in collaboration with TODD Pharm (a subsidiary of Ewha Technology Holdings) and researchers at Pusan National University, has been selected for the 2026 National Drug Development Program. The research team plans to develop a long-acting therapeutic candidate based on fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) with the aim of treating metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), a condition that has not been adequately addressed by contemporary medicine.
These achievements illustrate Ewha’s strengths as a leading research university with capabilities ranging from solving challenging problems in basic science to advancing environmental technology and biohealth, as well as its robust foundation for industry-academia collaboration and its leading role in the development of national strategic technologies.
