Ewha Family Luncheon Held to Celebrate 140th Anniversary
Ewha Womans University hosted the 140th Anniversary Commemorative Luncheon for Ewha Families on July 7 at Lee Sam-bong Hall in the Ewha Campus Complex, celebrating the university’s founding with the families of alumnae who have carried on the Ewha spirit across generations. The event was organized as part of the Office of University Relations and Development’s Finding Ewha Families project, which seeks to commemorate the Ewha community’s history and traditions by inviting families with three or more generations of Ewha alumnae or 10 or more Ewha graduates within the same family. The luncheon was attended by some 150 people, including 35 of the 88 families who applied, along with Ewha Womans University President Hyang-Sook Lee and Ewha Alumnae Association President Lee Myung Kyung.
In her welcoming remarks, President Hyang-Sook Lee noted that Ewha’s 140-year history is the result of the dedication and trust of the Ewha alumnae, who have cherished the university across generations. She also shared her vision to carry Ewha’s values forward into the future. This was followed by a report on the progress of the Finding Ewha Families project and the presentation of appreciative plaques to 27 families recognized in the “Ewha Through the Generations” category and eight families in the “Ewha Runs in My Family” category. A spotlight was shone on notable families including one with four generations of alumnae and a large family that has produced 18 Ewha alumnae.
The event also featured remarks from representative families, celebratory performances by alumnae, a luncheon, and a session where participants shared unique family stories reflecting the special bonds that have connected generations of Ewha alumnae. The event concluded with everyone in attendance singing the school anthem together, reaffirming their pride and sense of belonging as members of the Ewha community.
This event served as a meaningful occasion to reaffirm the traditions and values that have been passed down over the past 140 years by diverse Ewha families, while reflecting on the Ewha spirit and the significance of solidarity that transcend generations.
