Ewha Hosts Walkathon to Commemorate 140th Anniversary
A commemorative walkathon called “Ewha, Walking Together” was held on April 28 to celebrate the 140th anniversary of Ewha Womans University. Organized by the Volunteer Services Team under the Office of Student Affairs, the event was designed to honor Ewha’s rich 140-year history and to share its vision of “leading the era of great transformation through inclusive innovation,” bringing together approximately 1,400 participants, including students, faculty, staff, alumnae, members of affiliated institutions, and local residents. The occasion carried particular significance as the university’s first major walkathon open to the local community.
The event commenced at ECC Valley, where Vice President for Student Affairs Jeong Ah Choi remarked, “I hope this serves as an opportunity to reflect on Ewha’s proud history and stride forward together into a new future,” and Ewha President Hyang-Sook Lee underscored the significance of the gathering with the following remark: “Today is a momentous day to once again share with the world Ewha’s core values of sharing, service, and togetherness, cultivated over the past 140 years.”
Following a celebratory performance by the cheering squad PYRUS, participants set off on their procession to the music of the Ewha Brass Ensemble, walking together along the roughly 1.4-kilometer course starting at ECC Valley, passing the main gate, and continuing Daehyun Cultural Park, Welch-Ryang Auditorium, and Pfeiffer Hall before looping back. During the march, a traditional gilnori street parade by pungmul folk percussion troupes heightened the festive atmosphere.
The festivities drew to close with vibrant performances by the Ewha Male Faculty Choir and the dance crew VIVACITY, while the Ewha Alumnae Association and various companies and institutional partners enriched the occasion through their generous sponsorship of souvenirs and refreshments.
