The department of mathematics provides basic knowledge of pure mathematics as well as applied mathematics to students who are majoring in mathematics, natural sciences, or other related subjects.

History
History

1951

The Department of Mathematics was established.

1982

Moved to the newly constructed science complex building and became a part of the College of Natural Science.

2005

The Department of Mathematics became a part of Mathematical and Physical Sciences.

The Aim of Education
  • Train students to think logically through understanding of the fundamental concept of modern mathematics.
  • Teach students to understand the relationship between mathematics and its surrounding studies and to adopt mathematics to wide range of scientific technology to become future mathematicians who can dedicate themselves to the development of scientific technology.
  • Help students to become a mathematic teacher in middle and high school by obtaining teaching certificate after completing courses in education.
  • Produce talented women to contribute to the society of information technology through the computer program combined with the mathematical theories.

Department’s Achievements

- Selected as the top-class department in natural sciences and engineering in the Joong Ang Daily University Ranking 2011;
  the only top-class department in natural sciences and engineering in the Joong Ang Daily University Ranking 2012;
  the upper department in natural sciences and engineering in the Joong Ang Daily University Ranking 2013;
  and the top-class department in natural sciences and engineering in the Joong Ang Daily University Ranking 2016.
- Received the Excellent grade in BK21 project’s comprehensive assessment from 2006 to 2013.
- Chosen to participate in the BK21 Plus project.

Internship Opportunities

- The department offers summer and winter internship programs to give mathematics majors interested in going to
  graduate school the opportunities to participate in research. Students participating in the program may take part
  in research and academic conferences.

Careers and Graduate School Destination

Many of the graduates are working in schools and universities. Most students are applying their scientific knowledge and skills in diverse areas such as educational, governmental, and banking institutions as well as commercial industries. Also, lots of students enter graduate school.
