The Department of Environmental Science and Engineering Leads ESG Research with Academic Excellence
The Department of Environmental Science and Engineering Leads ESG Research with Academic Excellence The Department of Environmental Science and Engineering Leads ESG Research with Academic Excellence Ewha’s Department of Environmental Science and Engineering demonstrated its scholarly excellence once more by winning a large-scale government project, while three of its undergraduate students have each published papers in SCI-grade journals in succession, adding to the department’s contribution to establishing a solid foundation for world-class research achievements. These achievements are significant as they exemplify the success of Ewha Frontier 10-10, Ewha’s project to establish an environment conducive to creative research. Ewha has been carrying out the Ewha Frontier 10-10 project with the aim of building a creative research ecosystem for producing world-class outcomes. Under the project, the department’s Leading Research Center for Smart Water Environment Management with Carbon Neutralization is leading the research on low-energy, high-efficiency smart water environment management in accordance with the 2050 carbon neutrality declaration. The center focuses on research on the movement and treatment of water environment-specific pollutants and water recovery. Chair Professor Yeomin Yoon Selected for the third Outstanding Overseas Scientist Invitation Program Plus 2023 Chair Professor Yeomin Yoon, a world-renowned expert in water environment management, has been selected for the third Outstanding Overseas Scientist Invitation Program Plus (Brain Pool+) 2023. The program will place him at the head of a project focused on the “development of water treatment technology and advancement of data-based water management technology to realize safe water environment welfare and achieve carbon neutrality.” This research project will continue until 2023, supported by a total of KRW 6 billion in funding. Through this project, Professor Yoon will conduct research on complex water environments and the detection and treatment method of multi-characterized pollutants and emerging contaminants by utilizing explainable artificial intelligence, thereby securing safe water sources and enhancing the welfare of the water environment. His research also encompasses the development of low-energy processes for freshwater production and water reuse, along with energy generation from water treatment facilities and resource recovery. These efforts are expected to contribute to achieving carbon neutrality in water environment management. Throughout this series of studies, Professor Yoon’s goal extends beyond a noteworthy increase in quantitative research outputs, aiming to increase the number of highly-cited papers and patents on original technology to enhance Korea’s environmental technology and narrow the technology gap between Korea and the top advanced nations. Undergraduate Students from the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering Publish Papers in SCI-grade Journals The department’s undergraduate students are also showcasing their potential as competitive researchers with remarkable research abilities in environmental science and engineering. Their academic excellence beyond borders was demonstrated by a series of publications in SCI-grade journals, a rare achievement for undergraduate studies. Dahee Park (incoming class of 2020) at the Laboratory of Contaminants of Emerging Concern for Water Environment (advisor: Yeomin Yoon) in the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, published a paper titled “Removal of selected contaminants of dyes and pharmaceuticals using MXene-based nanoadsorbents” in Separation and Purification Technology (Top 8% in Engineering, Chemical). Narae Yang (incoming class of 2020) at the same lab published the paper “Ultrasonic treatment of dye chemicals in wastewater,” in Chemosphere (Top 11% in Environmental Science). Furthermore, Jeongeun Lee (incoming class of 2021) at the Environmental Nanotechnology Lab (advisor: Ahjeong Son), will publish a paper titled “Iontolysis using an electrically excited solid source of aqueous copper ions compatible with bacterial gene quantification” in the May issue of Microchemical Journal (Top 14% in Chemistry, Analytical). The recent surge in publications in SCI-grade journals, coupled with achieving the highest-in-Korea FWCI in environmental science in the QS Rankings, demonstrates the department’s commitment to academic excellence and innovation. Ranked as a top institution in environmental studies by JoongAng Ilbo’s University Rankings in 2013 and ranked highly in the same paper’s University Rankings by Department in 2017, Ewha’s Department of Environmental Science and Engineering continues to uphold its reputation for both the quantity and quality of research output.
Ewha Takes the Lead in the Nurturing of Climate-tech Entrepreneurs in Partnership with the Asan Nanum Foundation
Ewha Takes the Lead in the Nurturing of Climate-tech Entrepreneurs in Partnership with the Asan Nanum Foundation Ewha Takes the Lead in the Nurturing of Climate-tech Entrepreneurs in Partnership with the Asan Nanum Foundation Ewha Womans University and the Asan Nanum Foundation signed an agreement for Ewha-Asan UniverCT (University x Climate Tech), a climate-tech entrepreneur nurturing project, at Pfeiffer Hall on February 27, 2024 (Tue.). Based on this agreement, Ewha will take the lead in fostering young climate-tech entrepreneurs in partnership with the Asan Nanum Foundation. The Asan UniverCT program (the name “UniverCT” is a portmanteau of “university” and the initials for “climate tech”) has been conducted by the Asan Nanum Foundation since 2023 with the aim of spreading the culture of climate-tech startups among universities amid the intensifying climate crisis, while nurturing climate-tech entrepreneurs possessing innovative technology, business competency, and entrepreneurship. “Climate tech” refers to all technologies used to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and address climate change concerns, a field that is recently emerging as a promising future-oriented technological sector that will be highly pertinent in the coming decade. This year, Ewha has been newly selected as a partner university for the program’s second year along with KAIST, following the previous year in which Seoul National University and Yonsei University participated. The Support Corps for Business Startups at Ewha, and 15 faculty members from the Department of Climate and Energy Systems Engineering and the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering will participate in the program, which is set to receive a total of KRW 1 billion over the next two years. Under the program, Ewha will install a climate-tech startup track in the undergraduate school and prepare a climate-tech startup design system and a scholarship fund in the graduate school, in order to raise students’ awareness of the climate crisis and attract students’ interest in climate-tech startups. Ewha has been advancing education and research in the field of climate and environment under the vision of the “Creative and Innovative Platform That Leads the Sustainable Society,” endeavoring to contribute to the sustainable development of humanity. As a leading institution in climate change research, the school established the Department of Climate and Energy Systems Engineering in 2017 and has been conducting world-class research through the Center for Climate/Environment Change Prediction, a priority research institute in science and engineering, and developed a global climate risk management model in collaboration with the Financial Supervisory Service. Under the Ewha-Asan agreement, Ewha is expected to foster outstanding prospective entrepreneurs based on its top-quality education and research, thereby leading the climate-tech industry and actively fulfilling its ESG responsibilities.
