Bringing a Fresh Breeze to Cambodia in the Scorching Summer
: Summer Mission Trip
The Upper Room Evangelistic Association (Chaplain: Ahn Sun-hee) has done missionary activities at home and abroad for 63 years since its foundation in 1960, and after it became an affiliated organization of the Office of the Chaplain in August 2008, it continued distinguished and various missionary volunteer programs based on Ewha’s Christian spirit, led by university student clubs.
ESSEL, one of the leading student clubs under the Upper Room(Supervisor: Chaplain Kim Hye-ryung, Professor Choi Jong-hoon of the Department of Preventive Dentistry at Yonsei), has been continuing the tradition of the Association through medical mission trips at home and abroad every year since 1971, currently with 29 Ewha nursing students and 36 Yonsei dental students. During the 1st semester, ESSEL members volunteered at the Center for Central Asia Students(CCAS) in Korea. During the summer vacation, the group of 9 alumni dentists, 8 nursing students, and 20 dental students carried out medical missions and volunteers at Ewha Srang School in Cambodia from July 7 (Sunday) to July 14 (Sunday), for a total of 8 days and 7 nights.

During the mission, Ewha’s nursing students set up medical equipment, prepared for treatments, and recited the medical ministry pledge. After completing all the medical services, they held a reporting session where all participants shared their experiences, reflecting on the significance of the mission.
Jeon So-eun (entered Ewha in 2022) shared her thoughts by saying, “This experience reminded me of the importance of practicing love and service according to Christianity. I will not forget what I learned today and strive to expand my love and hope to others.” Lee Ga-hee (entered Ewha in 2023) said, “I felt the unity we shared in God’s love during the worship service with the local children. I want to be someone who can help others in the future.”
Through the joint efforts of experienced healthcare professionals and aspiring medical students, ESSEL’s mission work will continue to build upon its long history of service, carrying forward the positive influence of Christians.
