Undergraduate and Master’s students of the Department of Dance at Ewha College of Music achieved excellent results at the “59th National Newcomer’s Korean Dance Contest.”

At the 59th contest, 224 people, the largest number ever, applied for the categories of Korean Traditional Dance, Korean Traditional Myungjakmoo, Korean Creative Dance, Modern Dance, and Ballet. In the preliminary round held from March 31 to April 1, 71 of the applicants advanced to the finals and participated in the contest at Roun Art Hall in Korean Artist Center on April 8.

Choi Woomin, who is pursuing her master’s degree in Dance Practice at Ewha graduate school, was honored with the grand prize by performing “Beokkoo Dance” in the category of Korean Traditional Myungjakmoo. In the category of Women’s Korean Creative Dance, Lee Seungyeon (Department of Dance, Class of 2024) was awarded the gold prize and Kim Minsun (Master’s in Dance Practice) was awarded the bronze prize. In the category of Women’s Korean Traditional Dance, Woo Dayoon (Department of Dance, Class of 2024) was awarded the silver prize and Kang Chaeyeon (Department of Dance, Class of 2024) was awarded the bronze prize.

The Newcomer’s Korean Dance Contest, hosted by the Korean Dance Association and started in 1963 as a Dance category for the Rookie of the Year Award, has been developed into a representative gateway for new dancers.
