Professors Park Sojeong and Cho Kyungsuk Receive Government Honors on the 2026 Science and ICT Day N

Professor Park Sojeong of the Department of Chemistry and Nanoscience and Professor Cho Kyungsuk of the Department of Environmental Engineering were recognized for their contributions to science and technology and received government commendations in celebration of the 2026 Science Day.
The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Communications Commission presented awards to 164 individuals for their contributions to the promotion of science, ICT, and national R&D performance evaluation at the 2026 Science and ICT Day ceremony held on April 21 at the Korea Science and Technology Center in Gangnam-gu, Seoul. At the ceremony, Professors Park and Cho were selected as distinguished contributors in the field of science and technology and received the Presidential Commendation and the Prime Minister’s Commendation, respectively.

Professor Park Sojeong, who received the Presidential Commendation, is regarded as a leading researcher in the field of nanomaterials. Over the past 20 years, she has led convergent research on nanomaterials, contributing to the advancement of national science and technology through creative research achievements and the cultivation of talent. She was selected as a founding member of the Korean Young Academy of Science and Technology in 2017 and as an Ewha Fellow in 2025. Her research excellence has been internationally recognized, and she currently serves as an Associate Editor of the international journal ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces, published by the American Chemical Society, as well as a member of the editorial board of Nanoscale, published by the Royal Society of Chemistry.
Professor Cho Kyungsuk, a leading scholar in environmental biotechnology, received the Prime Minister’s Commendation in recognition of her 38 years of dedication to education and research, fostering women in environmental engineering, developing technologies to reduce odors and greenhouse gases, and contributing to science and engineering education and the spread of scientific culture. She developed a technology capable of simultaneously reducing methane and odors, achieving multinational patents and technology transfer outcomes. In recognition of her innovative research leadership, she was elected as a full member of the National Academy of Engineering of Korea in 2018. In addition, over the past two decades, she has led efforts to popularize science through the “Ewha Science Education Program for the Public,” providing hands-on science education for underserved communities. Based on these contributions, she received the Women Engineers Award in Education (Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Award) in 2022 and was also recognized as a “Contributor to the Promotion of Science Culture 2025,” receiving a commendation from the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT.
