Exploring the Role and Future of Nuclear Energy in the Carbon-Neutral Era

윌리엄 맥우드 NEA 사무총장 초청 특별세미나 개최A special seminar featuring William D. Magwood IV, Director-General of the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) under the OECD, was held on April 2 at 11 a.m. in the ECC Conference Hall at Ewha Womans University.

Co-hosted by Ewha’s Renewable Energy Research Center, the Resilient Society Research Institute, and the BK21 Phase 4 Education and Research Group of the Department of Public Administration, the seminar was held under the theme “The Next Nuclear Era: Opportunities and Challenges.” The event was designed to examine the role and potential of nuclear energy from multiple perspectives in the context of global challenges such as climate change and carbon neutrality. It provided Ewha students and researchers with an opportunity to gain insight into international energy policy trends and next-generation nuclear technologies.

Director-General Magwood, a leading authority in international nuclear policy, has led the NEA since 2014. He previously served as a Commissioner of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (2010–2014), appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate, and as Director of the Office of Nuclear Energy at the U.S. Department of Energy (1998–2005). During his tenure, he contributed significantly to the development of the nuclear industry by leading the establishment of the Idaho National Laboratory and launching major initiatives such as the Generation IV International Forum (GIF) and the “Nuclear Power 2010” program.윌리엄 맥우드 NEA 사무총장 초청 특별세미나 개최

In his lecture, Director-General Magwood addressed key topics including the role of nuclear energy in addressing climate change and achieving carbon neutrality; global strategies and policy directions for expanding nuclear power; trends in next-generation nuclear technology development; and international programs for cultivating future talent. He also introduced various initiatives for the next generation, such as mentoring workshops for women researchers and the Rising Stars Awards. In addition, he highlighted the NEA’s High-Level Group on Gender Equality, which focuses on data collection and policy recommendations, as well as ongoing efforts in communication, engagement, education, and promoting gender-inclusive participation in the energy sector.

Jo William, Director of the Renewable Energy Research Center, remarked, “This seminar provided a meaningful opportunity for students and researchers interested in energy, environment, and policy to understand the present and future of nuclear energy from a global perspective.” He added, “In particular, we expect it will offer practical insights and motivation for women aspiring to pursue careers in the energy sector.”
