Founded in 1936, AOM is one of the most influential global academic associations in the field of management, with over 20,000 scholars from more than 120 countries. At its annual conference, cutting-edge research is presented, and outstanding papers are selected through a rigorous review process.

Their award-winning paper, “Invisible Boundaries: Within-Gender Faultlines in Women’s Executive Advancement,” was selected as a Best Paper by the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Division of AOM. This prestigious award is given to studies that make significant academic contributions to research on diversity and equity within organizations.

The study focuses on the concept of “faultlines,” a key framework for understanding group composition within organizations. While previous research has examined faultlines as combinations of various demographic attributes at the team level, this study shifts attention to the “strength” of each attribute to analyze the potential for invisible gender imbalances within organizations. The findings empirically demonstrate that the strength of gender-related attributes operates differently between male and female groups, and that these differences can influence women’s likelihood of advancing to senior positions. The research offers important implications for understanding diversity and leadership formation within organizations.

This recognition is particularly meaningful as the award-winning research was conducted by doctoral students, highlighting the global competitiveness of student-led research. It also reflects the strong research-oriented environment and academic excellence of the Ewha Womans University College of Business Administration. This achievement reaffirms the college’s accumulated research capabilities and is expected to lead to further world-class research outcomes in the future.

The study will be presented at the AOM Annual Meeting to be held in Philadelphia, USA, this August.
