Three Ph.D. Alumni from the Graduate Program in Communication & Media Appointed as Full-Time Faculty at Korean Univ. N

Three Ph.D. alumni from the Graduate Program in Communication & Media at the Graduate School ofEwha Womans Universitywill begin new positions as full-time faculty members at major Korean universities starting in the spring semester of 2026. The newly appointed scholars are Lee Hana (Assistant Professor, School of Journalism and Media Studies atSeoul Women’s University), Baek Jiyeon (Assistant Professor, Institute for Humanities and Social Convergence and Media School atHallym University), and Kang Seungmi (Assistant Professor, Department of Media Communication atUniversity of Suwon).

Lee Hana graduated from the School of Journalism and Media Studies atSeoul Women’s Universityin 2010 and received her master’s degree (2013) and Ph.D. in Communication & Media (2021) from the Division of Communication and Media atEwha Womans University. She later served as a research professor at the Institute for Age Integration Research atEwha Womans University, where she studied ways to alleviate generational conflict through the integration of age groups and digital communication. Based on this research, she developed a mobile application designed to facilitate intergenerational communication. Recently, she has expanded her research to examine how AI technologies recognize individual emotions and risk signals, focusing on strengthening ethical capacities in the use of AI. She shared, “My time at Ewha gave me the strength to continue pursuing scholarship. I hope to keep growing within that journey.”


Baek Jiyeon earned her bachelor’s degree in Communication and Media (Department of Broadcasting and Video, 2012), her master’s degree in Communication and Media (2017), and her Ph.D. in Communication & Media (2025) fromEwha Womans University. After completing her doctorate, she served as a research professor atChosun University, where she expanded her research on technology-mediated sexual violence. Her main research areas include information and new media systems, digital culture, gender studies, qualitative research, and the use of computational methods. She remarked, “The relationships I formed at Ewha taught me the courage to reveal my shortcomings as a scholar and to grow by addressing them.”


Kang Seungmi received her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration (2011), her master’s degree in Communication and Media (2014), and her Ph.D. in Communication & Media (2021) fromEwha Womans University. She later served as a visiting professor at the Graduate School of Policy Science atEwha Womans University. Her research has primarily focused on platform-based communication structures, digital journalism, and advertising policy and regulation. More recently, she has broadened her interests to public issues such as algorithmic recommendation environments, the spread of misinformation, and digital advertising regulation. She noted, “During my graduate studies, participating in various seminars, collaborative research projects, and serving as a society secretary provided valuable opportunities to experience the academic field up close. Those experiences became an important foundation for refining my research topics and establishing my standards as a researcher.”


The appointment of these alumni as faculty members demonstrates the strong academic capabilities and educational achievements of the Graduate Program in Communication & Media. In the fall semester of 2025, the program also produced three full-time faculty members at major Korean universities: Jeong Sagang (Assistant Professor, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at the Glocal Campus ofKonkuk University), Kang Hyewon (Assistant Professor, Institute for Humanities and Social Convergence and Media School atHallym University), and Lor Zhieh (Assistant Professor, Department of Media Communication atPusan National University).
