One of Two Selected in the Agriculture and Fisheries Sciences Field, Recognized as a Next-Generation Science and Technology Leader

Professor Kim Seon-ae of the Department of Food and Biotechnology has been elected as a new member of the2026 Young Korean Academy of Science and Technology (YKAST), as selected by the Korean Academy of Science and Technology.

YKAST is a national organization dedicated to identifying and supporting outstanding young scientists with exceptional research capabilities and creative perspectives, with the aim of fostering next-generation leaders in science and technology. The Academy pursues evidence-based policy recommendations, international cooperation, and the promotion of interdisciplinary research. New members are selected through a rigorous review process from among scientists aged 43 or younger who, after earning their doctoral degrees, have demonstrated outstanding achievements and scholarly contributions as independent researchers. Professor Kim was selected as one of only two new members in the field of Agriculture and Fisheries Sciences among the 2026 YKAST cohort, which spans five divisions: Policy Sciences, Natural Sciences, Engineering, Agriculture and Fisheries Sciences, and Medical Sciences.

Professor Kim’s research focuses on foodborne pathogenic microorganisms and food safety. She leads cutting-edge studies on metagenomics-based microbial analysis, as well as technologies for the detection and control of hazardous microorganisms in food. She has published 78 papers in internationally renowned SCIE-indexed journals, including 48 as corresponding author. As the head of the Food Hygiene Laboratory, she collaborates with organizations such as the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency, and the National Research Foundation of Korea to conduct research on next-generation sequencing–based food microbiome analysis, the construction of genomic big data, and the study of hazardous microorganisms to ensure food safety.

Through this selection, Professor Kim has once again been recognized for her excellence as an emerging scientist and her strong potential for future growth as one of the 29 newly elected YKAST members for 2026.
