The Institute of Age-Integrated Society (Director Jeong Soon Doo) hosted the symposium under the theme “Intergenerational Communication: Challenges, Encounters, and Connections” on September 18 (Thursday) at 2 p.m. at Ewha Womans University.
Ewha Womans University established the Institute of Age-Integrated Society in 2016 as a think tank to discuss ways to realize an age-integrated society and held the 4th International Symposium in 2023. The 5th symposium brought together domestic and international scholars to discuss ways to enhance understanding and solidarity between generations in a changing social environment.
In the first session, Dr. Fujiwara Yoshinori (Tokyo Metropolitan Institute for Geriatrics and Gerontology) presented “Win-Win-Win Strategy: Promoting Intergenerational Interactions and Relationships in Japanese Communities,” and Dr. Lee Hana (Ewha Womans University) presented “A User-Centered Mobile App to Reduce Depression and Loneliness Through Intergenerational Communication.” The session discussed strategies to promote intergenerational interaction in both community and online settings.
In the second session, Professor Sheehan Benjamin (International University of Japan) presented “Modest Markers, Big Questions: Why Age Matters in Our Tech Future,” followed by Professor Yoo Joseph (University of Wisconsin Green Bay) who presented “How Technology Generations Shape News Consumption, Selective News Trust, and Homogeneous Discussion among Older Adults.” The session explored challenges to fostering intergenerational understanding and solidarity in an evolving technological environment.
The symposium was meaningful in that it discussed intergenerational communication strategies and social challenges from multiple perspectives, seeking ways to promote intergenerational solidarity as it emerges as an important paradigm in aging policy.
