The research team, consisting of first author Haerin Cho (doctoral student), Eunsun Lim (doctoral student), Heejin Kim (PhD), Nayoung Jung (PhD), and corresponding author Professor Nam Kyung Choi, all from the Department of Convergence Health Science at the College of New Industry Convergence, received the Honorable Mention of the Ronald D. Mann Best Paper Award fromPharmacoepidemiology and Drug Safety (PDS)at the 41st International Conference on Pharmacoepidemiology and Therapeutic Risk Management, held in Washington, D.C., from Friday, August 22 to Tuesday, August 26.

PDSis the official journal of the International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology (ISPE) and a leading journal in the field of pharmacoepidemiology. The Ronald D. Mann Best Paper Award was established in 2001 to honor the academic contributions of the late Ronald D. Mann, the founding editor of the journal. Each year, only the most academically influential and innovative articles published in PDS are selected through a rigorous review by the editorial board and ISPE leadership. The number of awardees is extremely limited, and this year, only four papers were selected out of a total of 193 published in 2024. The awarded papers are permanently posted on the journal’s website.

The team’s award-winning article, “Association Between Influenza Vaccination and Acute Kidney Injury Among the Elderly: A Self-Controlled Case Series,” was based on doctoral student Haerin Cho’s master’s thesis. The researchers analyzed the relationship between influenza vaccination and the risk of acute kidney injury among adults aged 65 years and older in Korea during the 2018–2019 and 2019–2020 influenza seasons, confirming a trend of reduced risk of acute kidney injury following vaccination. This study extends the limited case-level evidence previously reported, providing strengthened scientific support for recommending influenza vaccination among the elderly.

Above all, this achievement is significant in that a student’s thesis was published in a highly prestigious international journal and went on to win an academic award, demonstrating the research capabilities and potential of the next generation of scholars. At the same time, it represents international recognition of the pharmacoepidemiology research outcomes accumulated by the Department of Convergence Health Science at this university and is expected to positively contribute to the advancement of drug safety evaluation research and education in Korea.
