The Department of Korean Studies Successfully Hosts Training Program

The department of Korean studies of the graduate school of international studies successfully hosted the training program in Korea for fostering Korean language teachers at local Thai elementary and middle schools. This training was part of the Korean language teacher fostering business and was held by the Korean Education Center in Thailand and co-hosted by Ewha Womans University and Chulalongkorn University for 10 days from July 20th (SUN) to 29th (TUE).
In this year’s program, 15 current teachers and pre-service teachers who have finished the non-degree Korean language teacher fostering process by Chulalongkorn University with excellent results and had a meaningful session of reinforcing Korean language teaching abilities and directly experiencing Korean culture.
The opening ceremony was held on July 21th, starting with a welcoming speech from the Korean Education Center director Choi Won-Seok, followed by opening speeches from professor Supaphan Bunlung from Chulalongkorn University and professor Park Seon-Hee from Ewha Womans University, Professor Lee Hye-yung from Ewha Womans University congratulated and expressed encouragement. The participants were full of passion and expectation as Korean language teachers and plunged right into training.
The training program was started with a keynote lecture from professor Lee Hye-Yung from the department of Korean studies from the graduate school of international studies, and included various lectures like “Korean letters and Korean language from the perspective of communication,” professor No Sang-Ho’s “Korea’s Society and Culture,” professor Chun Kyung-Hyo’s “Korea’s Cultural Heritage,” the participants were able to expand their substantial understanding of Korea through education practice, cultural experience, and exploring historical sites such as Andong and Gyeongju.
Thailand is a country with high demands for Korean language education; it has included the Korean language subject as part of the university entrance exam(PAT) since 2018 and has reorganized it has a A-level foreign language subject since 2023 up to now. accordingly, the needs and interest for fostering professional Korean language teachers has been increasing.
Professor Park Sun-Hee(department of Korean studies from the graduate school of international studies of Ewha Womans University), who was in charge of the training program in Korea mentioned, “This training was a meaningful experience for the current and pre-service teachers to improve their substantial education abilities and provide deep experience into Korean culture,” and added “We hope they will grow into excellent teachers who will contribute to local Thai education based on passion for Korean language Education.”
