Professor Emeritus Jihee Lee of the College of Medicine, who also serves as Director of the Inflammation–Cancer Microenvironment Research Center, has been named a 2025 Fellow of theAcademy of Physiologyunder the International Union of Physiological Sciences (IUPS).


Established in 2021, the IUPS Academy of Physiology is a global, non-political organization that represents the diversity and excellence of physiologists around the world. The Academy aims to advance research and education in physiology and contribute to health and society through scientific progress. Each year, IUPS rigorously selects 30 new Fellows based on “outstanding and sustained academic achievements in physiology or significant contributions to the field.”


Professor Lee has dedicated her career to research as Director of two leading MRCs (Medical Research Centers): the Center for Tissue Injury Defense Research (2010–2019) and the Inflammation–Cancer Microenvironment Research Center (2020–2027). Her groundbreaking work in lung injury, pulmonary fibrosis, and tumor immunology has garnered international recognition. In addition to her research, she has played a key role in mentoring world-class women scientists in medicine and has contributed to medical advancement through academic publications and global collaboration. After retiring in February of this year, Professor Lee continues her leadership as an emeritus professor and MRC director, taking an active role in driving scientific innovation and its practical applications, while also nurturing the next generation of researchers.


“It is a tremendous honor to be named a Fellow of the IUPS Academy of Physiology, and I am truly grateful,” said Professor Lee. “I will take this meaningful recognition as motivation to further support the growth of young researchers and contribute to the advancement of basic medical science in Korea.”
