Following the chapel service held at the Main Auditorium, the Student Government took to the stage and read a declaration titled “To Our 8,000 Fellow Ewha Students,” uniting their voices in opposition to the Yushin Regime. As students soon poured out through the campus gates to stage a street protest, they were met with police resistance, resulting in numerous injuries. Amid the escalating tension, President Kim Ok-Gill of Ewha Womans University stepped to the front of the protest line to protect the students. President Kim persuaded the students to gather once again inside the auditorium. There, they staged an all-night prayer sit-in, passionately denouncing the regime’s oppression of academic freedom and fervently calling for democracy in Korea. We invite you to remember this moment of courageous leadership and unwavering commitment to justice in Ewha’s history.
