“Scranton-gil” Designated as Honorary Street in Front of Ewha Womans University
Ewha held a joint ceremony with the Seodaemun-gu Office in the ECC building at 11 a.m. on June 20 (Fri.) in order to commemorate the designation of Scranton-gil as an honorary street.
This honorary street designation was intended to honor the devotion and contribution of the missionary Mary F. Scranton (1832-1909), the founder of Ewha Haktang as Korea’s first educational institution for women, in commemoration of the 140th anniversary of Christian missions in Korea. Scranton-gil spans the entire 555-meter length and 15-meter width of Ewhayeodae-gil, located in front of Ewha Womans University in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul, where signboards and street name plates indicating the honorary street will be installed at the center and both ends of the street.
The ceremony featured a progress report by the Seodaemun-gu Office, followed by a commemorative speech from the District Mayor of Seodaemun-gu Lee Sung-heon, congratulatory remarks from the Ewha Womans University President Hyang-Sook Lee, and the unveiling of the signboard for Scranton-gil. “The missionary Scranton took the first step for women’s education in 1886 with the forward-thinking conviction that women deserve to learn, which became the cornerstone of Ewha Womans University,” remarked President Lee in her speech. “The newly-named Scranton-gil is not merely the name of a place, but a symbolic space that honors Ewha’s roots, reflects on the path we have walked, and reaffirms our path forward.” Lee also added, “Ewha will continue to nurture women leaders based on the Christian spirit and the values of truth, goodness, and beauty, while growing as a university that pursues harmony with the local community.”
Besides Scranton-gil near Ewha, the Seodaemun-gu Office also designated Underwood-gil in front of Yonsei University as well as Appenzeller-gil in front of Methodist Theological University as honorary streets. The district office plans to hold the respective commemorative events in order. The designation period lasts from April in 2025 to April in 2030, with the possibility of future extension.
