Rethinking “Family” in East Asia: The Intersectional Politics of Care, Reproduction, Citizenship, and Race

East Asian societies, particularly Japan and Korea, have long organized their social structures around the family unit. This family-centered orientation has been deeply inscribed in various social institutions, from welfare policies and population policies to migration and adoption policies. All of these have been established as biopolitical governing mechanisms since the modernization period.

Especially, care systems, adoption institutions, reproductive technology regulations, and population policies reveal reproductive injustices formed through social control and state intervention. These mechanisms determine who can form families, bear and raise children, and who holds the qualifications and responsibilities for caregiving. They expose stratified inequalities in rights and resources surrounding family formation and reproduction. The family thus functions not merely as a private sphere but as a site of gendered and racialized biopolitics constituted within political and social power relations.

This conference aims to examine the East Asian family ideology and critically explore the historical formation processes of familialism. We also seek to share theoretical and practical attempts to deconstruct and reconstruct these systems. Through this endeavor, we hope to reconsider the possibilities of diverse family formations in the East Asian region and explore new meanings for such configurations.
