Sumi Lee specializes in East Asian Buddhist philosophy, with a particular focus on Korean Buddhism. She received her Ph.D. for her research on the position of the Silla Yogācāra monk Taehyŏn (大賢, ca. eighth century) within the East Asian Buddhist tradition. Her scholarship has since centered on the philosophical relationship between the Yogācāra and Tathāgatagarbha traditions, especially in connection with questions of Buddhist metaphysics, soteriology, hermeneutics, and ethics. Her research is particularly concerned with the relationship between the ultimate and phenomena, as well as the problem of their mediation. She has published articles on the philosophical issues surrounding the commentaries to the Awakening of Faith (Dasheng qixin lun 大乘起信論), one of the influential treatises in East Asian Buddhism. More recently, her research interests expanded to the soteriological approach by the Koryŏ Sŏn master Chinul (知訥, 1158–1210) and to the subject of interreligious dialogue.
