Young-sook Nam Professor
Department of International Studies
Young-sook Nam is a university professor, diplomat, and economist with extensive experience in international and national policymaking. She has served as Korea’s Ambassador to Norway (2018-2021), Economic Advisor to the President of the Republic of Korea (2021-2022), and Secretary General of WeGO (World Smart and Sustainable Cities Organization) (2016-2018). Currently, she is a professor at Ewha Womans University’s Graduate School of International Studies, where she is also Director of the Development Cooperation Program. Before joining Ewha Womans University in March 2008, she had held various posts at international and governmental institutions, including economist at the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in Paris, research economist at the International Labor Office (ILO) in Geneva, and research fellow and head of the China Research Team at the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) in Seoul. She was Deputy Director-General at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Korea, where she played a leading role in negotiating a number of Korea’s free trade agreements (FTAs), including the Korea-U.S. FTA, the Korea-EU FTA, and the Korea-ASEAN FTA. Professor Nam received her M.A. in Economics and Ph.D. in International Development from Stanford University and her B.A. in Economics from Korea University. She has published widely on development cooperation, international trade negotiations, environmental policies, corporate social responsibility (CSR), and the Chinese economy. Her current research interests include sustainable development, climate negotiations and diplomacy, China and the global economy, and comparative welfare state regimes.
