Natural History Museum

At the time of its establishment, the Natural History Museum exhibited 655 articles related to biological and earth sciences research and education, which had been collected and preserved for many years. An exhibition room with a floor space of 460㎡ opened in December 1973 on the 4th floor of the art gallery and a new building was built in May 1997 on 2000㎡ of land, featuring the latest display techniques.

The Natural History Museum features a research lab, lecture rooms, display rooms (an open room, a special exhibition room, and a diorama), and a storage room. The open exhibition room has 6 sections: plants, insects, invertebrate animals, vertebrate animals I, II, and earth science. Each corner has sample displays, explanations, sketches, and pictures as well as 4 small diorama sections recreating the ecological environment. The diorama room is one of the best facilities in Korea where one can see the mountains, swamps, and marine ecosystem of Korea’s central districts as well as various fauna and flora.

The supergraphics on the staircase walls from the first to the fifth floors show the evolution of the planet and its living organisms including the birth of the planet, the first living organisms, and the dawn of man. The museum also features an ecology section providing first-hand experience in the reproduction, growth and cycle of living organisms.

Special exhibitions take place every year based on a wide range of topics. The museum collects, exchanges, donates, purchases, and holds samples both for academic studies and for securing seeds for organisms in danger of extinction due to the rapidly changing environment. It also owns and displays samples of natural monuments, endangered species, endemic species, rare varieties, new species, etc.

The Natural History Museum and the Research Institute of EcoScience have launched a natural history class to increase the understanding and interest in nature for kindergarten and elementary students, as well as the general public. It also offers free lectures by professionals in the field, ecological surveys to study current ecological changes, exhibition education on the contents of the open/special exhibitions, discovery events combining experiments with fun, field trips, and other diverse educational programs.

The museum was selected as the learning center for field experience by the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, and was authorized by the Ministry of Culture & Tourism to provide curator training owing to its history. It is also registered under the Ministry as a first class museum and runs internship programs to nurture professionals. It runs an online website as well as a Cyber Natural History Museum, as an information service on exhibited articles.

The docent system and volunteer system are in operation for the promotion and development of the Natural History Museum, where one can choose between exhibition guidance and information, developing educational programs, facility management and maintenance, newsletter publications, etc., upon completion of a short training program. Current volunteers include students, retired professors, alumni, homemakers, etc. The museum holds 213,314 sample articles of 5,177 species. It is open Monday through Saturday, 10am to 4pm and is closed on Sundays and national holidays. There is no admissions fee.
