Sungbin Youk (PhD, University of California, Santa Barbara) is an assistant professor in the Division of Communication and Media, where he studies media message processing and persuasion theories. His research mainly investigates the mechanisms behind persuasive effects and moral judgment using experimental, computational, and psychophysiological methods, including fMRI and eye tracking. As an advocate of interdisciplinary research, he advances communication scholarship through what he calls the “theory–method–practice triangle,” which emphasizes theoretical contributions grounded in rigorous methodologies and applied to resolving real-world communication issues. In collaboration with colleagues and students, he examines entertainment content, health communication, and human–machine interaction, striving to promote more responsible media engagement and to ensure that communication research meaningfully contributes to societal well-being. He has been recognized with an excellence in teaching award at UC Santa Barbara and research awards at international conferences, including those organized by the International Communication Association.
