Edae Hak-bo Won the Grand Prize at the 2023 Contest for Campus Journalism Respecting Life

Edae Hak-bo, a student news media of Ewha Womans University (Editor-in-chief: Seonghui Park), won the Grand Prize at the 2023 Contest for Campus Journalism Respecting Life. The contest, hosted by the Korea Foundation for Suicide Prevention and organized by the Internet Newspaper Ethics Committee, was founded this year to prevent youth suicides and promote the value of respecting life. The members of the jury from the academia and the journalism world chose the winners. Selected were one team for the Grand Prize, one for the Top Excellence Prize, two for the Excellence Prize, and four for the Participation Prize. The winners of the Grand Prize were Minseo Na, Yerin Sin, Hwisu Jeong, and Yujin Heo, journalists from Edae Hak-bo.

The award-winning articles are all special features on the September 25th, 2023 edition of Edae Hak-bo. The jury commended the winners for exceptional framing, content, editing, and in-person investigations and interviews, along with notable efforts to propose the alternative expression of “extreme choice,” a euphemism for suicide in media reporting. The jury also commented that the choice of the topic showed originality, and interview features seeking the insight of journalists were convincing.

The awarding ceremony took place in Maehwa Hall on the 19th floor of the Korea Press Center on November 21st at 4 p.m. The Grand Prize winners received the award certificate, trophy, and prize money of two million won. “It was an opportunity for me to realize once again that good journalism is not just about good writing but also having a sense of responsibility for the influential power of her works in society,” said Minseo Na, the Managing Editor of Edae Hak-bo. “I wish there could be more discussion on ethical media reporting on respect for life, and Edae Hak-bo will strive to write good articles, complying with media ethics in newsgathering,” she said.

Edae Hak-bo, the Ewha’s representative media organization established in 1945, is a highly trusted news outlet and training center for its high-quality journalism because students engage in every part of the newspaper production process from framing and newsgathering to editing. Students at Edae Hak-bo receive training to be professional journalists: Student journalists write articles for the newspaper every week, and instructors from media organizations provide regular mentoring and summer/winter intensive training courses. Edae Hak-bo has demonstrated its strength with multiple winnings in news competitions, such as receiving the Photo and Graphic Award in 2018, the News Reporting Award in 2020, and the New Currents Award from SisaIN magazine.
