Professor Hyun-Hea Yang at the Christian Studies Department Won the Kim Kyo-sin Academic Award from the Kim Kyo-sin Society.

The first awarding ceremony of the Kim Kyo-sin Award took place in the 8th Kim Kyo-sin Memorial Conference at Ewha Womans University Church on November 18th (Sat). The conference took place under the theme of Kim Kyo-sin and Motherland. Kyo-sin Kim was a Christian theologian and the proponent of the Non-church Movement, believing that Joseon could be "the heart of an epoch, comparable to any other European country." The Kim Kyo-sin Society was established in 2014 to celebrate the legacy of Kyo-sin Kim.

"Professor Hyun-Hea Yang is one of the top researchers studying the Non-church Movement in Korea," said President Sang-ik Park of the Kim Kyo-sin Society. "Traveling between Japan and South Korea multiple times, Professor Yang accomplished unrivaled achievement in the research on Kanzō Uchimura and Kyo-sin Kim," said President Park. "Kyo-sin Kim lived a life that aligned his personal life with religious faith and political belief. He followed the life of Jesus Christ, which I couldn’t help but realize how difficult it would have been.” Professor Yang said. “I would like to express my sincere gratitude to God for granting such a spiritual mentor to me and the Korean society when it is so difficult to find such a mentor,” she said. Mijeong Kim, a Ph.D. student in the Christian Studies Department at Ewha Womans University, also received the award certificate and prize money as the winner of the Kim Kyo-sin Research Award.

Professor Yang received her master's and doctorate degrees from University of Tokyo for religious history studies. She studies East Asian civilization transformation, using the methods in the history of ideas. Her books on Kyo-sin Kim include Yoon Chi-Ho and Kim Kyo-Shin and Christianity in the Historical Relations between Modern Korea and Japan. She is now a professor at the Christian Studies department at Ewha Womans University, working on related research.
