Ewha Journalism Day Event: Introduction to Credit and Non-credit Journalism Programs at Ewha Womans University

Ewha Journalism Day, an event for introducing credit and non-credit journalism programs at Ewha Womans University and asking questions of alumni journalists, took place at B153 in Ewha-POSCO Building on October 13th (Fri). More than ninety students attended the event that was co-hosted by the Department of Communications and Media, Ewha Media Center, and Ewha Media Career Center.

Ewha Journalism Day is the first event of such a kind that introduces various credit and non-credit programs for Ewha students who are interested in building their careers in the journalism industry. As the first recognized educational institution providing journalism education, Ewha Womans University has become an alma mater for many renowned journalists, such as Myong-Sue Chang (incumbent chairperson of Ewha Haktang), the first female CEO of a major daily newspaper, and Jeongmin Lee, the first female editor-in-chief at The JoongAng.
In an effort to preserve such a tradition, the Journalism Track at the Communication & Media Department provides state-of-the-art infrastructure for journalism practica, such as Seoam Video Production Center, and wide-ranging courses from theoretical ones, including Philosophy of Journalism and Journalism and Society, to practicum ones on news reporting and writing by expert faculty. Thanks to such support, many Ewha graduates have broken into the journalism industry and won the major journalism awards. In the past decade, four journalists from Ewha Womans University have received the Korea Journalist Award, one of the most prestigious journalism awards in South Korea.
DEW and Edae Hakbo, a current affairs webzine at the Department of Communications and Media and a student journalism organization at Ewha Womans University, introduce what kind of activities they do. Both are popular non-credit programs for gaining journalism experience as a student.
The first session of the event introduced credit and non-credit programs: Edae Hakbo for gaining realistic journalism experiences by working at a media outlet; the Media Career Center (MCC) for journalism entrance exams preparation; Yoonseyoung Journalism School (YJS) for educating prospective journalists with an effective curriculum; DEW, a current affairs webzine at the Department of Communications and Media. “There’s a wide river between graduating from college and breaking into the journalism industry, but you have so many useful stepping stones at Ewha,” said Seonghui Park, the editor-in-chief at the Ewha Media Center. “These non-credit programs are your stepping stones, so I hope all of you can use them as much as possible.”
The second session of the event: alumni journalists answer questions from students and share their stories about college life.

At the second session, there was a Q&A session with alumni journalists: Kieun Yun, Hyejin Jeon, Doyun Lee, and Jeeyoung Park (journalists at The Kyunghyang Shinmun, The Dong-a Ilbo, KBS News, and JTBC News respectively) answered prepared questions from the students and explained how courses and non-credit programs at Ewha were helpful when they began their career as a journalist.
“When you start your career as a journalist, what really matters is what you learned from your experiences, rather than experiences themselves,” said Hyejin Jeon, who took part in many non-credit programs at Ewha, including Edae Hakbo, the MCC, the YJS. “If you want to be a journalist, I encourage you to participate in both credit and non-credit programs actively.”
“Journalism education at Ewha is one of the best, both in quantity and quality, and that is why Ewha alumni could build an influence in the journalism industry for a long time,” said Professor Jihyang Choi, who planned and organized the Ewha Journalism Day event. “I hope students can be outstanding journalists in the future, like your alumni, by tapping into all the journalism-related resources at Ewha.”
