Professor Choi Jung Hyun appointed as the first female non-executive director of Samsung Engineering

Choi Jung Hyun, a professor of the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, was appointed as the first female non-executive director of Samsung Engineering.
Samsung Engineering held a regular general meeting of stockholders on the 17th, and recommended six inside and outside directors including Professor Choi. Professor Choi received the most attention as she was the first woman to be recommended as an outside director in Samsung Engineering.
The new appointment of Professor Choi is to bring diversity to the board of directors and improve ESG performance by establishing an ESG committee, said Samsung Engineering. The ESG committee is expected to contribute to the company’s sustainable growth through deliberation and resolution on matters regarding the company’s ESG strategy, promotion plan, shareholder value enhancement, and social responsibility.
Professor Choi received her bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science and Engineering from Ewha Womans University, and earned her master’s and doctorate degree in Environmental Engineering from Princeton University. She is currently a member of the Central Environmental Policy Committee of the Ministry of Environment and a member of the Forest Welfare Committee of the Korea Forest Service. It is expected that her expertise in the environmental field and various experience in administration will play a major role in improving the company’s ESG performances.
Professor Choi has been running an Integrated Management of Environment Graduate Program supported by the Ministry of Environment and Korea Environment Corporation since last year. The program is an environmental management system that minimizes and optimizes the emission of pollutants by setting customized standards for each workplace. It is a business that can contribute to the companies’ advanced environmental management while the importance of ESG management is getting more attention from companies worldwide.
